What You’ll Need
Before you start baking this show-stopping cake, make sure your kitchen has all the ingredients you’ll need. Here’s your list for the grocery store:
- 2 cups flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
- 2 cups sugar
- 3 eggs
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup sour cream
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 sticks unsalted butter
- 1 pound powdered sugar
- ½ cup sour cream
- Fresh strawberries
- Fresh blueberries
Making the Cake
Now that you have all the ingredients together, you’re ready to start cooking.
Start by spraying a 10- x 15-inch jelly roll pan with nonstick spray and preheating the oven to 350 F.
Next, whisk together the flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder in a large bowl.
In another bowl, beat together the eggs, oil, sour cream, and vanilla with an electric mixer on medium-low speed. Then beat in half the dry ingredients on low speed. Add the other half of the dry ingredients and beat just until combined. Be sure not to over-mix the batter.
Spread the batter into the pan and bake for 20 to 25 minutes. Cool the cake completely.

Make the Frosting and Decorate
While the cake is cooling, make the frosting. Use a stand mixer or hand-held electric mixer to beat together the butter and half of the powdered sugar. Then beat in ½ of a cup of sour cream until smooth. Add the rest of the powdered sugar, then fold in the vanilla.
Once the cake is totally cool, spread half of the frosting over the top. Make sure it’s as smooth as you can get it.
Fill the upper left corner of the cake with blueberries. Try to make a 5-inch square.
Prep your strawberries by picking some that are small and close to the same size. Remove their stems and slice them in half. Start at the top of the cake and make two rows of strawberries from the blueberries to the edge of the cake. Then add a stripe of white frosting under the strawberries. Keep alternating in this pattern to the bottom of the cake.
That’s it! Now you have an easy, festive, fun dessert for your 4th of July event. Keep the cake in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve, and be ready to wow everyone at the cookout.
