Currently, the Prius Plug-in gives drivers an EPA-estimated 11 miles or electric range. However, only 6 of those miles are continuous, or all-electric range. Here’s why. In order to maintain necessary speed and acceleration, the Prius Plug-in’s electric drive motor has a low output that requires it’s engine to be switched on before the battery pack has been completely depleted. The new 10-mile all-electric range means you can save gas, while going farther than ever before!
Always keeping the driver in mind, Toyota seeks to find a balance between cost reduction and range increases when focusing on battery improvements. The California Resources Board (CARB) has been revising the rules, challenging automakers to improve zero-emisions capability.
Toyota always stays ahead of the game. While they are expected to release the new Toyota Prius Plug-in with at least 10 miles of all-electric range in compliance with the new CARB regulations, they seek to continue to come up with the most cost effective solutions for their customers, whether it be lower cost with lower all-electric range or pricer options with more all-electric range.
